Acceptable weight loss: Advice given by Fitness Expert John Shepherd This is a topic on many people's minds at the moment - here's are some tips (0.5- 1Kg or 1-2 lbs per week): If you are overweight and starting out on a workout programme and following a calorie controlled and balanced diet then it is possible that you may lose more weight. However, this should not be more than 0.5-1% of body weight. You must also ensure that you consume sufficient calories 1) to maintain your energy needs and 2) to obtain all the necessary nutrients needed to promote optimal body functioning (this includes eating 'healthy fats'). Many people decide to cut back too drastically on calories and risk slowing down their body's metabolic rate, although this might promote rapid weight loss in the short term. This strategy - if carried out over a long period - could result in creating a metabolic situation where the pounds are piled back on when calorie controlled eating or exercise is stopped. Basically your body gets used to functioning on fewer calories and converts the additional ones to fat when it gets them. |
